High Voltage Cut Out Fuse / Dropout Fuse

Fuse cutouts are essential high voltage protective devices that are used outdoors and are connected to the incoming feeder of distributing transformers or distribution lines. They play a significant role in safeguarding transformers and lines from short circuits, overloads, and on/off loading current. There are mainly two types of fuse cutouts: dropout fuse cutouts and load switching fuse cutouts.
The dropout fuse cutout consists of insulator supports and a fuse tube, with static contacts fixed on two ends of the insulator support and a moving contact installed at both ends of the fuse tube. The fuse tube comprises an inner arc-exiting tube, an outer phenolic compound paper tube or an epoxy glass tube.
On the other hand, a load switch fuse cutout provides enforced elastic auxiliary contacts and arc-extinguishing enclosure for switching on/off loading current. It is designed to withstand high electrical and mechanical stresses, making it ideal for high voltage applications.
Overall, fuse cutouts are critical components in power distribution systems and should be deployed in various parts of the network to ensure the safety and reliability of power supply. They are constructed with high-quality material and undergo rigorous testing procedures to ensure that they can withstand harsh outdoor conditions and provide optimal performance.


During normal operation, the fuse tube is tightly closed by the fuse link. However, in the event of a fault in the system, the fuse link quickly melts due to the fault current, creating an electric arc. This arc heats up the arc-extinguishing tube, causing it to release a large amount of gas. This gas generates high pressure, which in turn blows the arc away from the tube. Once the fuse link has melted, the moving contact loses its tightness, and the mechanism locks, causing the fuse tube to open completely. When the need arises to disconnect the load, the operator uses an insulating operating bar to pull the moving contact. At this point, the main contact and auxiliary static contact remain connected. As the contact is further pulled, the auxiliary contact separates, creating an electric arc between the auxiliary contacts. This arc is elongated in the arc-extinguishing enclosure gap, and simultaneously, the arc shield releases gas to blow off the arc as the current reaches zero.
